Speaker Biographies:

Justin J. Bellante, Co-founder, President & CEO, BioIQ

Justin co-founded BioIQ and since its inception has applied his technical skills and experience to solidify BioIQ’s corporate direction and strategic partners, develop the BioIQ diagnostic testing service, and build the organizational and operational structure to support the subsequent growth.

Prior to joining BioIQ, Mr. Bellante developed novel materials and testing platforms for Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) device fabrication and biological applications while pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Bellante has additional experience as a researcher in the Radiation and Reliability Physics organization at the Sandia National Laboratory and at the Microfabrication Facility within Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). These positions exposed him to a variety of research, technical, and manufacturing scenarios, all of which give him an in-depth understanding of product creation, development, and deployment—activities that are vital to the BioIQ mission.

Bellante holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Materials Engineering from CWRU, and is on leave from his Ph.D. program in Materials Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has published articles in scientific journals such as Science, Applied Physics Letters, and MRS Proceedings.

Dean Hovey, President and CEO, Digifit, Inc.

Dean Hovey, a native of Silicon Valley, joined Digifit, Inc. as its president and CEO in the fall of 2011. Digifit combines mobile personal technology with experience design to help people form lifelong healthy habits. Over the past 30 years Dean helped start 12 technology based companies. He has held senior executive team positions in two public companies. His personal experience spans retail, product design, entrepreneurship, business development, general management and venture capital.

During the early nineties Dean served as general partner of Avalon Ventures, a premier seed venture capital fund sponsored by the venture firms Kleiner Perkins, IVP, Sequoia Capital, and Norwest Ventures. Avalon formed attractive deals with unprecedented success rates.

While attending Stanford University Mr. Hovey created a new medical instrument to improve differential white blood cell counts. He founded Hovey/Kelley Design to take the instrument from prototype to production design. Within a year Hovey/Kelley added a number of clients including Apple Computer. The firm merged with Matrix and ID Two in 1991 to form IDEO.

Dean is the author of several patents including the patent for Apple Computer’s mouse. He earned BS and MS degrees from Stanford University in General Engineering Product Design.

Debra Lieberman, Director, Health Games Research University of California Santa Barbara

Debra Lieberman, Ph.D., is a media researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she teaches in the Department of Communication and directs the Health Games Research national program, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to advance the research, design, and effectiveness of digital games aimed at improving health and health care.

Ms. Lieberman’s research focuses on processes of learning and behavior change with interactive media, with special interests in behavioral health and the psychology of health game design.  She also consults for health organizations, education agencies, and media and technology companies to improve user engagement and to help design and evaluate digital media and games for entertainment, learning, and health behavior change, for people of all ages.

Debra holds an Ed.M. in Media and Learning from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (1974), where she studied and collaborated with Sesame Street researchers and producers, and she holds a Ph.D. in Communication Research from Stanford University (1986).

Ian Silverberg, Affinity Medical Fitness, Inc.

Mr. Silverberg began his first business in 1987 when he solidified exclusive rights to distribute Coconut Willie Hawaiian suntan oil in the Southern California market while a freshman in college at UCSB.  Ian now has over 25 years of entrepreneurial and business management experience in various capacities, including overseeing the acquisition, development, management, and successful sale of a California based health club; founding Affinity Medical Fitness, Inc., a medically integrated wellness/physical therapy clinic; and founding Silverberg Management, Inc., a small business consulting, coaching, investment, and management company that focuses, primarily on the wellness and real estate sectors.

As an avid health/wellness enthusiast, Ian recently paired up with the creators of Foundation Training, a methodology that provides a new approach to relieving pain and improving health that is founded on the idea that each and every one of us has the ability to identify and correct the imbalances created by modern society.  In this endeavor, Ian is leading the company through its early stage path to sustainability as the CEO and Chief Alignment Officer.

Mr. Silverberg also has more than a decade of experience in both commercial and residential real estate investment/syndication, has been awarded two patents, is a vibrant participant in many local non-profit efforts and boards, and is an active investor and business advisor/mentor.
