It is estimated nonprofit organizations nationally contribute 5.3% to the national GDP, employ over 15M professionals and serve countless people in the United States and around the world. In Santa Barbara county over 1300 nonprofit organizations provide resources and a wide variety of services to every sector of society. Nonprofit organizations are a critical partner in helping ensure every community cares for all of it citizens and is working to build a better future.

Many nonprofit organizations have small teams fundraising teams and don’t enjoy the success they need to finance the costs of running their nonprofit organization. The result can mean important services are not being delivered to people that need it most. Often at the core of this problem is the cost and complexity of building and managing a traditional fundraising team. This includes fundraisers, researchers, marketing, data services, reporting, leadership, event coordinators, writers and the list goes on.

AI holds the potential to solve many of these issues helping lowering the cost of finding individuals who are likely to support the nonprofit organization and to intelligently manage the daily activity of fundraisers. Come and learn more about the role of AI can play in helping your nonprofit raise the financial resources it needs to fund your organization.

About the Speakers

CHARLES SCHULTZ, CEO and Founder, Crescendo Interactive, Inc.

President & CEO Charles Schultz has been actively involved in the field of planned giving for more than three decades and is widely regarded as the leading expert in planning giving. Crescendo grew out of his desire to encourage philanthropy by providing tools to help charities serve donors and close major and planned gifts.

Crescendo Interactive, Inc. is the largest provider of gift planning and blended gifts marketing solutions. Founded in 1984 and based in Camarillo, California, Crescendo is the preferred service provider for gift planning among colleges, universities, healthcare organizations, social service institutions, faith organizations, professional advisers and other nonprofit organizations.

Crescendo’s services are supported by a staff of in-house technical, legal, design, marketing and multimedia specialists to meet the various needs of planned giving teams.

DON PATTERSON, Professor, Westmont College

Don is a Professor of Computer Science at Westmont in the Math and Computer Science department and directs the Data Analytics program. As an undergraduate at Cornell University, he majored in Computer Science and received a Masters of Engineering in Electrical Engineering. Following graduation he joined the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. He returned to school to get a Ph.D. from the University of Washington and eventually received tenure as a professor at the University of California, Irvine. In 2015, Prof. Patterson moved to Santa Barbara and Westmont College.

Professor Patterson’s research lies at the interface of ubiquitous computing, artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction. In this space he researches applications, algorithms and systems that use sensors to address tough problems such as newborn baby health care and climate change. He is also a co-founder of 7+ start-up companies based on his research and received Westmont’s 2019 Teacher of the Year award.

ADAM MARTEL, President and Co-founder, Gravyty

Adam is the CEO and Co-Founder of Gravyty in Boston whose mission is to help nonprofits raise more money without hiring more people or buying more data. Adam is a graduate of Merrimack College with a degree in Communications and Business and is a MBA candidate at Babson College.

As a seasoned major gifts fundraiser, Adam has a deep and personal understanding of the challenges that all nonprofit organizations face while trying to raise money to support their causes. Throughout his years as a front-line fundraiser, Adam has worked with thousands of donors and has helped nonprofit organizations raise millions of dollars.

Before his time as a fundraiser, Adam founded three companies and had a diverse and eclectic background in advertising, public relations, journalism and collegiate athletic coaching. He has also spent time as a senior financial analyst at a major investment management firm where he oversaw an international finance department that guaranteed the accuracy of approximately $50 billion dollars in international and domestic trades.


REED SHEARD, Vice President for College Advancement and CIO at Westmont College, and Board Member, MIT Enterprise Forum

Reed joined Westmont College in 2008 and serves as CIO and Vice President for College Advancement. He has been a principal part of the leadership team responsible for the three largest fundraising campaigns at Westmont that have secured resources for new buildings, programs, scholarships and institutes. Reed serves on numerous boards, most recently providing leadership on the Higher Education practice group of the CIO Executive Council, AAAC (AI in Advancement Advisory Council) and Education Advisory Council at In 2015, he was named one of the top 100 CIOs in North America by ITG/Computerworld. Reed earned a Master of Divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary and a doctorate in higher education leadership at Seattle University.
